About us

Our Baltimore History.

From our humble beginnings as a simple advertisement in the back of the January 1932 issue of “The Modelmaker” magazine, seeking modelers in the Baltimore region, the Baltimore Society of Model Engineers has persevered through economic upturns and downturns, wars, five different locations, and now a pandemic. We can’t help but wonder if the individuals who met in a NE Baltimore home on March 4th, 1932 ever imagined that the organization that they began would remain one of the oldest, if not the oldest, model railroad societies in 2021.

Today we celebrate our 89th birthday as an organization of members with a common interest in building and operating scale models of real railroads and trolleys (light rail) transportation systems. Help us celebrate, if not by the PayPal donate button, through our Facebook page, we get 100% of your donation – no fees are taken.

A few things we’re great at

Train show attendance

Club Events

The club attends the Great Scale Model Train show and the Greenberg’s Great Train and Toy show at the Maryland state fairgrounds in Timonium. We display and run our Timesaver switching challenge layout as well as selling items donated to the club. We also attempt to have an annual fan trip to the various tourist railroads in the area.

Join us if you are interested in making model railroading your hobby! The application fee is $50 and membership is $200 per year for full membership, which is payable in two installments if desired. Other membership categories are available for younger (under 18) and those who only can visit the club a few times a year. When you become a member part way through the year the dues are pro-rated for that year. Your application fee goes towards the first dues payment. We have a three month probationary period for a new prospective member to get to know the club and members to get to know them. During this three month time we read a prospective members application at our monthly business meeting. If you are present at the meeting we ask you say a few words about yourself and your interests in the hobby. After the third reading the members present vote on your application for membership in our historic organization.
